Astronomers find clouds of primordial gas from the early universe (11/22/2011)

For the first time, astronomers have found pristine clouds of the primordial gas that formed in the first few minutes after the Big Bang. The composition of the gas matches theoretical predictions, providing direct evidence in support of the modern cosmological explanation for the origins of elements in the universe. ...> Full Article

An icy gaze into the Big Bang (3/25/2011)

An icy gaze into the Big BangScientists of the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information in Innsbruck, Austria, have reached a milestone in the exploration of quantum gas mixtures. In an international first, the research group led by Rudolf Grimm and Florian Schreck has succeeded in producing controlled strong interactions between two fermionic elements -- lithium-6 and potassium-40. This model system not only promises to provide new insights into solid-state physics but also shows intriguing analogies to the primordial substance right after the Big Bang. ...> Full Article

LHC experiments bring new insight into primordial universe (11/30/2010)

After less than three weeks of heavy-ion running, the three experiments studying lead ion collisions at the LHC have already brought new insight into matter as it would have existed in the very first instants of the Universe's life. ...> Full Article

'Dropouts' pinpoint earliest galaxies (11/10/2009)

'Dropouts' pinpoint earliest galaxiesAstronomers, conducting the broadest survey to date of galaxies from about 800 million years after the Big Bang, have found 22 early galaxies and confirmed the age of one by its characteristic hydrogen signature at 787 million years post Big Bang. The finding is the first age-confirmation of a so-called dropout galaxy at that distant time and pinpoints when an era called the reionization epoch likely began. ...> Full Article

Researchers interpret asymmetry in early universe (12/20/2008)

Researchers interpret asymmetry in early universeThe Big Bang is widely considered to have obliterated any trace of what came before. Now, astrophysicists at the California Institute of Technology think that their new theoretical interpretation of an imprint from the earliest stages of the universe may also shed light on what came before. ...> Full Article

Possible Cosmic Defect May Be a Window into the Early Universe (10/26/2007)

Possible Cosmic Defect May Be a Window into the Early UniverseAn unusual cold spot in the oldest radiation in the universe, the cosmic microwave background, may be caused by a cosmic defect created just after the Big Bang, a Spanish and U.K. research team reports in Science Express. ...> Full Article

Physicist Explores What Happened Before The Big Bang (7/1/2007)

New discoveries about another universe whose collapse appears to have given birth to the one we live in today will be announced in the early online edition of the journal Nature Physics on July 1 and will be published in the August issue of the journal's print edition. "My paper introduces a new mathematical model that we can use to derive new details about the properties of a quantum state as it travels through the Big Bounce, which replaces the classical idea of a Big Bang as the beginning of our universe," said Martin Bojowald, assistant professor of physics at Penn State. Bojowald's research also suggests that, although it is possible to learn about many properties of the earlier universe, people always will be uncertain about some of these properties because his calculations reveal a "cosmic forgetfulness" that results from the extreme quantum forces during the Big Bounce. ...> Full Article
